Earlier today, I wrote a letter to New York City Mayor De Blasio to urge him to strip away our sanctuary city status. Our safety and security should always come first. There is no justification to keep illegal immigrants who commit crimes on our streets. You can read my letter to the mayor below:
Dear Mayor De Blasio, My name is Avery Pereira and I am a resident of our wonderful city. I am writing to you on the subject of our city’s sanctuary status.
For many years, our city has allowed the entry of thousands of illegal immigrants of all backgrounds. As a result of the status, law abiding residents have suffered severely from individuals here illegally who have performed criminal activity. The sanctuary city status is an unethical and irrational policy that rewards thugs who do not belong in our city, while punishing innocent New Yorkers.
These individuals have no place in our city and I urge you to strip away this reasonable status to help bring justice back on our streets. Although I also believe Dreamers should be protected from deportation due to no fault of their own, there is no justification to keep criminal illegal immigrants in our city. Our safety and security should always come first.
Please consider this proposal, as it will make our city a safer and prosperous place for all of us. Thank you Mr. Mayor for your service to our city. God bless.
Best Regards, Avery Pereira
— This comes in the wake of the acquittal of the murderer of Kate Steinle. The accused, Jose Ines Garcia Zarate, was in the country illegally. He had already been deported five times, but the city of San Francisco is listed as a “sanctuary” city like New York City. The sanctuary status means that local law enforcement officers are not obligated to cooperate with federal immigration officials, when it comes to deporting illegal immigrants. In this case, San Francisco officers were not ordered to deport Mr. Zarate after the tragic incident.
President Trump has threatened to withhold federal funding to cities with similar immigration policies, but a federal judge in California permanently blocked his executive order last week. Mayor De Blasio, along with other mayors of sanctuary cities, has vowed to fight the Trump administration to retain their irrational status. It has become clear that liberal elected officials, such as Mr. De Blasio, would rather put the interests of those living in our country illegally before law abiding residents and citizens.
